Bringing You Time Honoured Oriental Healing Art

Everyone goes through stressful situations. Sometimes it’s the frustrations at the workplace that get to you or family issues like divorce and separation. However, some people are perpetually in a state of being anxious. A large number of persons have symptoms associated with anxiety. When it reaches clinical levels, the condition can drive a person to the edge, and he or she may resort to dangerous actions such as inflicting self-injuries or suicide.

Medical professionals have, in the past, tried to come up with a remedy for this condition, with psychotherapy and other prescribed medicines being fronted as treatment options for anxiety. However, it has become apparent that one of the most effective ways of dealing with sleeping disorders, stress, frustration, and other forms of emotional disturbance is acupuncture.

Definition of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an old therapeutic procedure that features the insertion of needles into certain pressure points of the body. The history of acupuncture goes back to 100 BC when it is believed to have been discovered in China. This makes the procedure among the oldest practices in Chinese medicine. The technique was recorded in “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine,” a medical publication that was published around 100 BC in China.

This ancient practice has been performed by people for thousands of years and is believed to have many benefits. Among the benefits associated with acupuncture include relief against emotional disturbance such as frustrations, sleeping disorders, and stress. Scientific studies have supported claims that acupuncture does alleviate certain symptoms associated with anxiousness.

Scientific Studies

As an ancient treatment procedure, researchers have, over the years, been able to study the effects of acupuncture when used to treat anxiousness, stress, emotional disturbance, and frustration. As recently as 2016, research had shown that acupuncture was sufficient in treating anxiety in lab rats. In 2015, a study was conducted among patients who had tried acupuncture and results showed that the technique helped in ending numerous symptoms of anxiety that conventional medical procedures such as psychotherapy had failed to treat.

The University of York also had a study done using 755 individuals who suffered from depression. This study concluded that acupuncture was effective in lowering the depression in these individuals, many of whom were on anti-depressants. However, some medical experts are critical of these studies, poking holes in them, stating that they are not reliable enough to prove the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating anxiety and other emotional disturbances. Nonetheless, most scientists agree that acupuncture does help in eliminating a few symptoms associated with anxiety, including stress and sleeping disorders.

The Procedure

As aforementioned, acupuncture involves the insertion of needles in the body’s pressure points to balance the person’s energy. These points are areas on the body that are most responsive to pain stimuli. During the procedure, a patient is required to lie on their front, back, or side, depending on the areas where acupuncture is to be performed. The needles can be driven into the skin manually or stimulated using electricity. While most people associate needles with pain, the procedure is, for the most part, painless.

Painless Laser Needles

Non-invasive Low Level Laser Acupuncture

The only sensation a patient feels is a dull sting immediately the needle is inserted, which later subsides. In acupuncture, the needles are required to be single-use in which case they should later be disposed after use. The needles are left in the points for around 25 - 40 minutes and then removed after at least five minutes. At City Acupuncture, we’ve taken it a notch higher and use laser technology instead of needles for those needle sensitive people, this technology delivers complete pain free acupuncture therapy. The number of acupuncture sessions that the patient is required to undergo is dependent on the severity of anxiety, sleeping disorders, or frustrations that is to be treated.

Scientific Backing

Scientists have come out to explain how acupuncture works in alleviating the symptoms of emotional disturbance including stress, frustrations, and sleeping disorders. They affirm that acupuncture results in the release of endorphins by the body, which act as painkillers.

The sudden spike in endorphins in the body helps in combating emotional disturbance, stress, and anxiety. Health professionals have established that skin rashes that are linked to frustrations, sleeping disorders, and other emotional disturbances disappear a few moments after an acupuncture session.

Precautions

Individuals who have certain health conditions are discouraged from undergoing acupuncture. These include patients who have bleeding issues like hemophilia and persons who have a pacemaker for electro-acupuncture. The reason why acupuncture should not be administered to such people is that the procedure could have adverse effects on their fragile health conditions.

Another thing worth noting is that you should not use acupuncture as a substitute for any medications prescribed to treat anxiousness. Such a decision should only come from a registered acupuncturist. It is also important to know if your insurance policy covers the acupuncture sessions, and if not, what options are available that are suitable for your financial capacity.
